SYNOPSIS

With all the spotlights on the immigration crisis from Africa & the Middle East to Europe, one might forget about the current exoduses within Europe itself. Every year an average of 15.000 Bulgarians leave their country to try to find a better life in Western Europe.

Filmmaker Wil Mathijs filmed 7 months in an improvised camp in the industrial wasteland of Ghent, Kafkaesque Belgium. On The Edge of Happiness is a tragic existential and raw observational documentary that penetrates integer but persistent into the lives of Stefan and Niki, who together with their families have taken shelter in a rotten, collapsed barack on the immense domain of the public transport company De Lijn, hoping for a job, social support or a home that will never come. From zero to below.
